| Summer is a Great Time to Refresh |
|
Summer is a great time to refresh. We take a vacation to refresh ourselves and our families and we plant flowers to refresh our yards. What about
refreshing our homes? Now, I'm not talking about expensive renovations or even painting. Just as staging helps maximize the look and feel of a home for
sale, staging (or re-staging) can re-invigorate your rooms and help you to fall in love with them all over again.
Summer is a great time to refresh your rooms as you open doors and windows to allow light and fresh air in. There are three basic steps for a summer
refresh to help rooms feel lighter and brighter. The first step is to choose a room. It is easy to get overwhelmed with a project like this,
so doing one room at a time helps to add an element of control. If possible, enlist the help of a friend or family member, to bounce ideas off of.
Or if time is an issue, give Purpose in Place Professional Organizing a call. The kitchen or family rooms are a good place to start as they are used
the most and will create the biggest impact.
The second step is to edit. Have a large bin handy for items that have no real function or that you don't really love, and one bin for items you do love,
but may want to move somewhere else. Just start putting things away. Be ruthless and question the placement of everything. Ask yourself, "Why is this here
and is there a better place for it?" This is a perfect time to box up that ugly vase Aunt Janice gave you as a wedding present and you have
displayed out of guilt ever since. Those items that you can do without can be donated to charity, but if they are broken or worn out, they belong in
the garbage. By the time you are done editing the room should look quite stark and bare.
The third step is to add items back in, to complete the space. Go through the bin you just filled to see if anything can be reintroduced in the space in a
new location that will make it feel new. Go shopping in other rooms of the house and pull items you think will work in the room you are working on.
Look for small baskets and bins to contain remote controls, and other small items to limit the "necessary" clutter. Rotate the artwork and photos from one
room to another to keep them fresh, especially if they are pieces you love. After time, when left in the same place, they tend to melt into the background.
Cushions in a breezy summer fabric brighten up a sofa, chair, or bed. Simply changing the frames of photos or artwork from dark to light can also make a big
impact. Finally, add a vase with fresh flowers. Nothing says summer like the fragrance of fresh blooms.
