Scary Storage
Problem
Our client had been moved into her townhouse by her family while she was laid up with an injury. Her injury prevented her from unpacking and finding proper homes for all her things. This storage room became the holding area for all of the extra items that the client wanted to keep but didn’t have the time or ability to sort through. The room held all of her important papers archived in cardboard banker boxes as well as all of her seasonal clothing, extra furniture, wrapping supplies, her son’s sports equipment, craft supplies, books, CD’s, movies and games. Our client had spoken to other organizers who were willing to sort through it all and containerize it, but she didn’t just want bins stacked floor to ceiling, lining the walls. She wanted the space to hold all of her things in a convenient way. She also wanted some space where her son could have friends over and watch movies. What she really wanted was a way to house all her stuff in an attractive and functional way so that she could get the most use out of the room. A tall order? Yes, but with a lot of hard work, and some creative problem solving, completely achievable.

Solution
The first thing we did for was empty out the room of all the items that didn’t belong. Then we started the sorting process where we took garbage to the dump, un-needed items to the Salvation Army and made categories of everything she was keeping. We spent an entire day shopping for the needed organizing tools & furniture and another day building all of the cabinets and shelving units. In the large 3 door units in the storage room we hung all of her extra jackets, dresses & tops and in the 2 rows of shelves we put all of her extra pants. In baskets on the top shelves we put items like belts & socks. We gave her two shoe organizers to house her shoes, shoe accessories & her scarves. We also gave her a shelving unit to house all of her purses and boots with the basket on top holding her clutches. The bookcase was used for some of her extra books, her son’s books and large vases. In the TV wall unit we placed all of the games and electronic items. Behind the curtain is a shelving unit that holds all of the client’s office paperwork & supplies, her sons craft supplies, misc items like cable cords and extra picture frames. This area also has stackable bins full of dishes, keepsakes, and photos. We moved her archived files into sturdy plastic hanging file bins with lids. The curtain helps make the room look more like a family room instead of a storage room. All of the wrapping paper, cards, and seasonal decorations were organized into plastic drawer units and bins in the closet for easy access. After everything was given a home there was plenty of room left for a cozy media corner with comfy folding chairs for her son and his friends.
