Seaquam Art Room
Problem
A high-school classroom is used by close to 200 students everyday and an art room requires a lot of storage space for supplies and projects in progress. It also requires considerable space to work, not to mention all the tools required to run a classroom. Sheri really wanted a less cluttered space to work with clear zones for the different types of work that is done in an art room. She especially wanted a great space to get creative and work on the yearbook with her fellow yearbook classmates. Mr. Emmett was also looking for tips on how to make the whole room more functional and easier to manage.

Solution
First we started going through the cupboards to see what we were dealing with. There were definitely some supplies that were no longer useful (dried up glue, empty paint containers, etc). We spent a lot of time sorting, purging, and reorganizing cabinets. We doubled the shelf space in the paper cabinet to maximize the storage and worked with Mr. Emmett to design a student supply cabinet, a new shelving unit for supplies and works-in-progress, and repurposed existing furniture for better use. Mr. Emmett also designed a great new table (work station) for the centre of the room. Mr. Ng and his students deserve BIG thanks for building all the designs. The Yearbook room is now much cozier and has much more dedicated workspace for the students. We also reorganized their small kitchen area and gave them some dishes and new storage for their snacks and teas and hot coco. By removing the old kiln that hasn’t been used in over 6 years, we were able to include the small sofa in the new space, so that they have somewhere comfortable to brainstorm and look through magazines, design books, and old yearbooks. We also added extra lighting throughout the room and repurposed a large metal cabinet for the camera equipment. Each Yearbook student now has space to store their papers in personalized files and trays so they don’t get misplaced (or accidentally thrown out.) It is not a very large space which is used by a great many people, but we are confident it will function so much better now.
